As for academics she started out taking interior decoration with ICS of Canada, while working as a clerk for the government. She learned about design foundations, colour principles, design styles throughout the history of time. Again well designed spaces never go out of style.
When the government contract ended she enrolled in the first ever women in trades program and found herself in the shop learning and making cabinetry. “Having hands-on experience truly has set me up for success as a designer”. She naturally progressed to the accreditation of Certified Kitchen Designer. All of this, before the age of 26. Three children later, 10 houses and 18 years of being a trades woman one could confidently say she knows what she is doing. “I have always been a creator/maker. I am a designer of spaces and of life.”
At a young age Elaine also knew the importance of living holistically, she spent much of her time as a child outside connecting with nature. A health crisis eventually took her to the direction of becoming a registered holistic practitioner. So, how does this tie into design?
Although Elaine knows with technology that design will always be evolving, at the end of the day all things design, come from nature. This is what keeps her grounded and what she hopes to pass on to her clients.
And for those who are curious. Adeline Home was named in honour of her grandmother Adeline (Campbell) Sommerville, a lady and a mother of 8 children. Even in the poorest of times Adeline always knew how to make a house a home.
